OLD WORLD WINE
Only the very first customers might remember what the REFUGE was supposed to be when we opened two years ago.
Our sign billed us as a ‘Wine Pub’, a place where you could sample the many regional varietals (mostly French) that were to be found in true ‘Bistrots a Vin’. It was a great plan except Belgian Beer exploded in popularity and so sealed our identity.
The Wine List at the REFUGE has always been our hidden gem, complete with the terroir-driven varietals that dominate the Old World.
The REFUGE thrives in the quiet, unassuming town of San Carlos, CA where the hand-carved, meltingly tender, boldly flavored navel pastrami is sending shockwaves through the gastronomic consciousness of patrons who call it “the greatest this planet will see in some time.” If that wasn’t enough, the REFUGE boasts the most Belgian Ales on draught (18) in the Bay Area, with more in bottles.
But wait, just for good measure, we grind our own blend of hamburger on a daily basis as well as slice Ribeye for our Authentic Cheesesteaks. Our stunning selection of Charcuterie & Cheese includes favorites such as: Foie gras torchons, house-made pates, chopped liver, and dry-cured salami.
Not to mention, we also offer honest Old World wine, dazzling salads (with chicken, of course) and appetizers, a 35,000 song iPod library, and an owner and staff crazy (and skilled) enough to pull it all off. Casual connoisseurs unite! This place is the real deal. Whether it’s a quick lunch or a raging evening, the REFUGE experience is unlike any other place at any one time.
